About the TOEFL Speaking Interview task

The interview task simulates a short online interview with a researcher. You hear a scenario — a study about exercise, shopping or family traditions — and then answer 3–4 questions, one at a time, with 45 seconds for each answer.

The questions move from simple and personal towards opinion, so later answers need more development. Responses are judged on fluency, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, and on whether you actually answer the question with enough detail.

Common mistakes: a one-sentence answer that stops after 15 seconds, spending the opening seconds on filler ("That's a very interesting question"), and memorised answers that don't fit the question asked. A simple pattern works: answer directly, give a reason, add a real example from your life. The model answers on each sample show how that sounds.
