About the TOEFL Build a Sentence task

Build a Sentence is a TOEFL Writing task about grammar in context. You see a short message from another speaker — a question or a comment — and a set of word chunks. Your job is to put the chunks in order so they form a grammatical, natural reply. In these sets one chunk doesn't belong: it is a near-miss form of another word, such as "sets" instead of "set".

Each set has 10 items and an 8-minute timer, so you have under a minute per sentence. What it tests is word order, verb forms, articles and prepositions, and whether the reply actually responds to the message.

Common mistakes: trying to use every chunk (the extra one is there to catch you), choosing a verb form that sounds right on its own but breaks agreement, and putting time or place phrases in the middle of the sentence. Read the finished reply in your head before you move on.
