About the TOEFL Conversation task
In the conversation task you hear a short exchange between two people — usually a student talking with a classmate, professor or staff member — and then answer multiple-choice questions. Each set has one conversation, a few questions and 30 seconds per question. You hear the audio once.
Questions focus on why the speakers are talking, the problem and how it gets solved, what one speaker suggests, and what the student will probably do next. Tone matters too: hesitation, surprise or agreement often carries the answer.
Common mistakes: noting every detail instead of the main problem and decision, choosing an option that was mentioned but then rejected, and missing a change of plan near the end. Listen for two things: what the issue is, and what they decide.
