About the TOEFL Read the Announcement task
This task — Read in Daily Life on the updated TOEFL iBT — uses the short texts people read every day: notices, flyers, emails and campus announcements. You read one text and answer a few multiple-choice questions. Each set has a 5-minute timer.
The questions ask about purpose ("Why was this posted?"), specific details such as dates and requirements, and inference — what a reader should do next, or what must be true. The texts are short, so the challenge is precision rather than speed.
Common mistakes: choosing an option that repeats words from the text but changes their meaning, missing conditions such as "only" or a deadline, and answering the purpose question from the first sentence alone. For every answer, find the exact line that proves it.
