Scenario
You have agreed to take part in a research study about sport and physical activity. You will have a short online interview with a researcher. The researcher will ask you some questions.
Question 1
Thank you for joining me today. I'm looking at how adults fit exercise into everyday life. Do you do any sport or exercise at the moment, and how often?
Show a model answer
I try to exercise about four times a week, though some weeks are better than others. Most of it is running, because I can start from my front door and I don't need to book anything. On weekends I sometimes play badminton with a friend from work. It isn't a strict routine, but it is regular enough that I notice when I skip it.
Question 2
Some people find it easy to keep an exercise habit going, and others struggle. What has helped you most, or what gets in the way?
Show a model answer
Having a fixed time helps more than anything else. If I go straight after work, it happens; if I go home first, it usually doesn't. The biggest obstacle is a busy period at work, when meetings run late and I lose the slot. Having someone waiting for me also makes a real difference, because I don't want to let them down.
Question 3
Thinking about your school years, how did the sport you did then compare with what you do now?
Show a model answer
At school sport was mostly team based and quite competitive. We trained for matches, and the point was to win. Now it is much more about feeling well and clearing my head after a long day. I actually enjoy it more, because nobody is keeping score and I can stop when I have had enough.
Question 4
Finally, if a city wanted more of its residents to be active, what one change would you recommend?
Show a model answer
I would spend the money on safe, well lit paths for walking and cycling rather than on big new stadiums. Most people will never join a club, but almost everyone will walk or cycle if the route feels safe. It also helps people who cannot afford a gym membership. Small, everyday changes reach far more people than one large facility does.
What a high-scoring response does
- Answers the question that was asked in the first sentence
- Supports it with a reason and a concrete example
- Keeps talking fluently for most of the 45 seconds
- Sounds natural: clear pronunciation, few long pauses
