About the TOEFL Choose a Response task
Listen and Choose a Response tests quick, everyday listening. You hear one short question or statement and choose the most natural reply from four options. Each set has 8 items with 20 seconds each.
Many wrong options are traps: they repeat a word you heard, answer a different question, or are grammatical but make no sense as a reply. The right answer is often indirect — "I'm still on the waitlist" answers "Did you register for the class?" without saying yes or no.
Common mistakes: matching words instead of meaning, missing whether you heard a question or a statement, and ignoring tone — an offer, a complaint and a request each need a different reply. Before reading the options, ask yourself what a person would naturally say back.
