Scenario
You have agreed to take part in a research study about how people spend their weekends. You will have a short online interview with a researcher. The researcher will ask you some questions.
Question 1
Thank you for speaking with me. I'm studying how adults use their free time. Could you describe a typical weekend for you?
Show a model answer
Saturday usually starts slowly, with a late breakfast and the shopping. In the afternoon I try to get outside, either for a long walk or to see friends. Sunday is quieter, and I do the chores I have been avoiding all week. I aim to keep at least half of Sunday completely unplanned.
Question 2
How different is your weekend from your weekdays?
Show a model answer
Very different, mostly because of pace. During the week almost every hour is already committed to something. At the weekend I can decide at eleven in the morning what I feel like doing. The other big difference is who I see; weekdays are colleagues, weekends are friends and family.
Question 3
Do you feel you get enough rest at the weekend? Why or why not?
Show a model answer
Honestly, not always. I often fill the two days with errands and social plans and then start Monday tired. The weekends that leave me rested are the ones where I deliberately keep a whole afternoon empty. I have got better at this, but it takes effort not to say yes to everything.
Question 4
If you suddenly had an extra free day each week, what would you do with it?
Show a model answer
I would use it for the things that always get postponed, like proper cooking and seeing people who live further away. I would also like to learn an instrument, which needs regular practice rather than occasional bursts. I suspect some of it would go on doing nothing in particular, and I would not regret that either.
What a high-scoring response does
- Answers the question that was asked in the first sentence
- Supports it with a reason and a concrete example
- Keeps talking fluently for most of the 45 seconds
- Sounds natural: clear pronunciation, few long pauses
