About the TOEFL Academic Discussion task

The Academic Discussion task puts you in an online class forum. A professor posts a question, two classmates reply with different views, and you write your own contribution. Each prompt has a 10-minute timer; aim for at least 100 words.

A strong post does three things: states a clear opinion on the professor's question, supports it with a reason or example of your own, and connects to the discussion — agreeing or disagreeing with a classmate and saying why. It is judged on relevance, development and language control, not on formal essay structure.

Common mistakes: repeating a classmate's argument in different words, writing a general introduction instead of answering the question, and running out of time before the example. You can drop the introduction-body-conclusion template; one focused paragraph that adds something new is what the task wants.
