Sleep and Memory
For a long time sleep was viewed as a passive shutdown, but research now shows the sleeping brain is hard at work. During deep sleep, the brain replays the day's experiences, strengthening the neural connections that store useful memories while pruning away trivial details. This is why studying before bed often beats a late-night cramming session: the rest that follows helps lock in what was learned. Different stages of sleep handle different tasks. Slow-wave sleep favours facts and events, while the dreaming stage known as REM appears to support skills and emotional processing. Skipping sleep, even for a single night, measurably weakens the next day's ability to form new memories. Researchers therefore argue that sleep is not time lost from learning but an essential part of it.
